Dell develops wireless technology

Wireless notebook networking is one of the hottest trends in mobile computing, particularly among educational institutions and large corporations. Market researcher International Data Corp. predicts a boom this year, with an estimated $839 million in sales and $1.56 billion in 2001.

Dell's new product, called TrueMobile, conforms to the IEEE 802.11 wireless local area network (LAN) standard, which has also been adopted by Apple and Compaq for their wireless systems.

Dell's commitment to wireless networking underscores the growing demand for the technology, which in the education market, for example, is seen as more convenient and affordable than punching out dorm walls to lay cable. The company in November extended its effort by expanding into wireless pagers and PCs.

Dell last September teamed with wireless networking provider AiroNet to provide a wireless networking option for corporate notebook customers. Archrival Compaq Computer a month later responded with wireless technology developed in house, spurring Dell to retool its wireless plan.

Akron, Ohio-based AiroNet isn't going away. The wireless networking provider, which Cisco agreed to acquire in November, will continue to produce PC networking cards and access points for Dell, but under the PC maker's brand name.

By offering its own wireless technology instead of using a third party, Dell can convince customers its offering is on par with Compaq's. The approach also is more in line with Dell's "be direct" marketing strategy of being a one-stop shop for products and services. Customers can also take advantage of Dell's three-year warranty and receive built-to-order systems with ready-to-use wireless networking.

The branded wireless strategy also could be crucial for Dell's assault on the education market, where during the third quarter it unseated top supplier Apple Computer. Apple bet big on iBook, its rugged consumer and education portable with built-in wireless support, but failed to quickly get key networking components to customers.

To use the wireless technology, notebooks are typically outfitted with a special PC card that connects over the air to a transmitter, or access point, attached to a local network. Once attached to the network, the access point gives mobile users full network access up to 300 feet indoors and 1,000 feet outdoors.

Later this year, notebooks and other portable devices enabled with Bluetooth are expected to appear and compete with IEEE 802.11. IBM is planning on a boon spurred by the competing technology, which is omnidirectional, so it doesn't have the same line-of-sight constraints as IEEE 802.11.

In conjunction with the TrueMobile announcement, Dell also unveiled new corporate notebooks. The higher-end model, the CPx J650GT, packs a 650-MHz SpeedStep Pentium III processor. Unlike other Pentium processors, SpeedStep clocks back to 500 MHz when running on batteries, extending their charge.

The Latitude CPx J650GT comes with the SpeedStep processor, 14.1-inch TFT screen, 64 MB of memory, 6-GB hard drive and 24X CD-ROM drive for $2,999. Two other models, the Latitude CPt S500GT and CPt S450ST feature, respectively, 500-MHz and 450-MHz Celeron processors. The $1,899 Latitude CPt S500GT also comes with a 14.1-inch TFT display, 32 MB of RAM, 4.8-GB hard drive and 24X CD-ROM drive. The other model, with a 12.1-inch display, is $300 less.

But they could not tell me what company even made the drive. just wondering if I'll be able to burn programs with it or have to use the home pc.

Also I'm sure I'll have to use the feature to block windows so it doesn't see it is a CDRW drive for my burned programs even though it is also a DVD drive? any comments or help would be greatly appreciated.

Best Buy to sell Dell Inspiron

Consumer beware, computer giant Dell and retail giant Best Buy are about to go through with a deal that will make select Inspiron laptops and desktops as well as XPS computers available at most Best Buy locations.

According to Business Wire, initial offerings are to include the XPS M1330 laptop in white color only, the Inspiron 1521 (AMD based) in blue and black and the Inspiron 1420 in black. Also to be available is Dell’s all-in-one “XPS One” desktop.

Inspiron Desktop models are to include the 530/531 models.

Michael Tatelman, vice president of sales and marketing for Dell said, “In the next few weeks, people looking to upgrade to a Dell notebook or desktop in the U.S. can visit their local Best Buy to check out and purchase our award-winning line of products.”

A vice president for Best Buy said that his company is proud to add Dell computers to its retail inventory. The Dell computers will be available online from Bestbuy.com or in most stores.

Specifications of the laptops will no doubt vary and may come in one or two configurations but it’s nothing like you will be able to do if you were to order directly from Dell. One could hope that the laptops will come with the higher resolution screens and discrete graphics but knowing Best Buy and how it likes to sell “the lowest common denominator” will probably sell models with standard displays and integrated graphics but we’ll have to just wait and see what develops.

  • How Come Dell Can Sell

Sometimes it pays to step outside the box one inhabits for a perspective shift.

For example, I've been chewing over whether it makes more sense for me to buy an Apple Certified Refurbished early 2008 MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz for Can$1,449, which is a decent discount of Can$650 from what they were selling for new a couple months ago, or to buy an Apple Certified Refurbished (ACR) 2.4 GHz MacBook for Can$1,049. Or even go with the black 2.4 GHz MacBook for a hundred bucks more than that. Or wait until some of the new Unibody machines hit the refurbished channel. Or wait until Snow Leopard ships....

If you share this affliction, you know how it is. And then I opened the newspaper this week and there's Dell Canada advertising Inspiron 1525 notebooks for the netbook-esque price of $549. That's Canadian $549, and with the Canabuck having dropped into the mid-to-upper 70 cents range US from its dizzying, intoxicating historical high of just over US$1.10 a year or so ago, we're talking a full-fledged Inspiron laptop here for the equivalent of US$440 at today's exchange rate.

Dell Inspiron in Sunshine YellowFor that astonishingly small amount of cash you get a 15.4" widescreen display, a Pentium dual-core processor (2.0 GHz/667 MHz FSB/1 MB cache; for a Core 2 Duo add $100), 2 GB of RAM, a 250 gigabyte hard drive, an 8x dual-layer SuperDrive, wireless, HDMI out, free shipping, and it comes in your choice of seven attractive colors: Jet Black, Espresso Brown, Ruby Red, Midnight Blue, Spring Green, Flamingo Pink, and Sunshine Yellow. Uh, make mine Espresso.

Dell Inspiron in EspressoBy comparison, the refurbished black MacBook has a 13.3" display, a Penryn Core 2 Duo processor, 2 GB of RAM, a 250 gigabyte hard drive, an 8x SuperDrive, wireless, an external display port that requires an optional adapter, free shipping, and will set you back $1,149. (If you opt for a white housing and a 160 GB HD, it's $1,049 for a refurbished unit.)
    Too Cheap?

Steve Jobs says you can't build a laptop computer for under US$500 that isn't junk and that Apple doesn't do cheap. So the Inspiron 1525 is definitely cheap, but is it junk? I'll venture that there are some quality and design compromises by comparison with the MacBook, but are these egregious enough to justify opting for a machine that costs more than twice as much and isn't even brand new?

ITManagement's Jason Perlow says he buys his PC in boxes from discount clubs like Costco, where quad-core 4 GB DELL and HP desktops with 500 GB hard drives can be had for $499-$699 as disposable commodities - using them for a while and then presumably passing them on or even discarding them and buying another.

That may make bottom line economic sense, but it rubs me the wrong way in several contexts. For one, it is hideously wasteful and contributes to the tsunami of electro-trash that is becoming another of the world's manifold environmental problems.

    Obama Will Inherit Cybersecurity Challenges

    Wednesday November 26, 2008

As President Bush prepares to leave office, the task of upgrading the security of federal information systems to deal with new cyberthreats continues to be very much a work in progress.

Several key federal cybersecurity initiatives launched during the Bush administration -- some in direct response to the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks -- are still years away. A few other initiatives are closer to completion but still don't do enough to protect federal networks and systems against increasingly sophisticated attacks from cybercriminals and nation states.
